You know what Google Ads costs you each month and roughly what it brings in. Now ChatGPT sells ads too, and you’re wondering whether some of that budget should move. The ChatGPT Ads vs Google Ads question comes down to timing, because the two channels often reach people at different stages. One has years of proof behind it, and the other is brand new. Here’s how they compare, and how to test without cutting what works.

Google Ads Answer a Search, ChatGPT Ads Join a Conversation
A Google search ad answers a request. Someone types “emergency plumber Kearny,” and ads matched to that search can appear on the results page. That person already knows what they want, and often they want it today.
A ChatGPT ad shows up inside a conversation instead. According to OpenAI, ads appear below ChatGPT’s response, chosen partly by the context and intent of the conversation. OpenAI also says ads don’t influence ChatGPT’s answers, and advertisers can’t shape, rank or alter its responses. Picture a couple in Cranford asking ChatGPT what drives the cost of a bathroom remodel. Below the answer, a sponsored card from a local contractor might appear if the ad fits.
In short, Google often catches the moment of need, while ChatGPT tends to catch the moment of research. So if most of your jobs start with an urgent call, keep Google search as your main channel. But if customers research for days first, as with remodels or new HVAC systems, a ChatGPT test makes more sense.
The Short Version, Side by Side
| Feature | Google Ads (search) | ChatGPT Ads |
|---|---|---|
| Where it shows | Search results | Below ChatGPT’s answer |
| What matches it | Keywords, broad match by default | The conversation, plus your context hints |
| Ad parts | Headlines, descriptions, optional call button | Name, logo, title, copy, image, link |
| Budget | Average daily budget you choose | $25 a day U.S. minimum, averaged over 7 days |
| Who sees it | Google searchers | Free and Go users, not Plus, Pro or business plans |
| Track record | Years of data | Beta, no published benchmarks |
Targeting: Keywords on Google, Context Hints in ChatGPT
On Google, you choose keywords, and each one has a match type. Broad match is the default, and it can show your ad on searches Google considers related. So negative keywords matter, because they block terms such as “jobs” or “DIY” that only drain your budget.
ChatGPT Ads uses context hints instead. They describe the conversations, topics or keywords where your ad may be relevant. However, OpenAI’s advertiser basics page says they are not exact-match keywords, and they don’t promise delivery in any given chat. Our explainer on how ChatGPT ads work covers them in more depth.
Location Options on Each Platform
On Google, you choose where your ads can show, such as a city. Google notes that a city target may also reach people in nearby suburbs. So if you serve only a few towns, watch where your leads actually come from.
ChatGPT Ads can target countries, states or regions, cities, markets and postal codes where available. However, there’s no map or “near me” placement. Google, by contrast, can show ads on Maps through Performance Max.
What ChatGPT Ads and Google Ads Look Like
A Google search ad is mostly text, though call assets can add a tap-to-call button. For a locksmith or an HVAC shop, that button is often the whole point.
A ChatGPT ad looks more like a small card, with the parts listed in the table above. OpenAI lists no call button among them. So your landing page needs a tap-to-call number near the top.

Auctions, Bids and Minimum Budgets
Both channels run auctions, and in both, your bid isn’t the only thing that counts. OpenAI’s auction weighs how relevant each ad is, and on Google, Ad Rank weighs the quality of your ad. Either way, a weak ad and a mismatched landing page work against you.
For ChatGPT Ads, OpenAI suggests starting click campaigns at a $3 to $5 max bid. Its minimum daily budget for U.S. dollar accounts is $25, averaged over seven days.
On Google, you can set your own maximum cost per click or let Smart Bidding aim each bid at conversions. Google also has you choose an average daily budget for each campaign. On most campaigns, a single day can reach twice that average.
Measurement: Years of Google Data Versus a New Beta
In Google Ads, you decide which actions count as conversions, such as a form or a call. If you’ve run Google for a while, your account knows what a lead costs you. That number becomes the bar any new channel must clear. Not tracking calls and forms yet? Start with our guide to building Google search campaigns that produce leads.
ChatGPT Ads is still in beta, and it’s only starting to scale. OpenAI’s advertiser FAQ says there are no performance benchmarks yet.
For tracking, OpenAI offers a website pixel and a Conversions API that count conversions in its Ads Manager. Even so, you pay per click or per 1,000 impressions, never per conversion. Google’s Local Services Ads, by contrast, charge only for leads.
Do ChatGPT Ads and Google Ads Reach the Same People?
From ChatGPT’s side, largely yes. Search Engine Journal reported on Similarweb data from March to May 2026. Of the 494 million ChatGPT users Similarweb tracked, 461 million also used Google. That’s Similarweb’s own measurement, so it won’t match OpenAI’s weekly user count. Search overall is far larger, though. The same report puts search at roughly five times the size of all AI chatbots combined, measured by monthly visitors worldwide.
So ChatGPT Ads and Google Ads can reach the same customer at different moments. A homeowner might ask ChatGPT to compare heat pumps on Sunday, then search Google for an installer on Monday. Still, OpenAI doesn’t show ads to people on Plus, Pro or business plans, so part of your market won’t see yours. Our overview of who sees ChatGPT ads lists the other exclusions.

How to Test ChatGPT Ads Without Cutting Google Ads
Our step-by-step ChatGPT Ads setup guide covers the build itself. Here’s how to fund and judge the test.
- Protect your proven campaigns. Keep Google search campaigns that bring steady calls fully funded. If you need test money, trim keywords that never produce a lead.
- Confirm you’re eligible. OpenAI lists local services among its supported categories, but some industries face extra rules. Verification alone can take up to 7 business days.
- Set a fixed test amount. At the $25 daily minimum, a four-week test costs up to $700 in ad spend. Picture a tree service in Monmouth County whose Google leads cost, say, $150 each. The whole test then costs a little less than five Google leads. If that’s a big share of your Google budget, fund it separately or wait.
- Match the message to the moment. A Google ad can lead with same-day service, if you offer it. A ChatGPT ad often fits the research stage better, so lead with a buying guide or a free estimate.
- Track both the same way. Set up conversion tracking in Google Ads and in Ads Manager. Add UTMs to ChatGPT links and give each channel its own tracked phone number. Then you compare leads, not clicks. Also ask new callers how they found you. After all, someone who saw your ChatGPT ad may call later from Google.
- Judge against a bar you set in advance. For example, keep going if ChatGPT leads cost no more than Google leads and turn into booked jobs. If they cost clearly more and rarely book, stop and move that money back to Google. If clicks came but nobody called, fix the landing page first. OpenAI warns that delivery can fluctuate during the beta, and a small test brings few leads. So treat a close result as unproven.
ChatGPT Ads vs Google Ads: Quick Answers
Which should I try first if I’ve never run ads?
Usually Google search, especially for urgent jobs. Before any ads, though, set up call and form tracking so your first dollars show a real cost per lead. Then add a ChatGPT test once you know that number.
Are clicks cheaper on ChatGPT Ads or Google Ads?
There’s no reliable answer yet, because OpenAI publishes no benchmarks. Compare cost per lead from your own tracked test instead. A cheap click that never becomes a call is no bargain.
Plan a Fair Test of Both Channels
When you weigh ChatGPT Ads versus Google Ads, start with how your customers buy. Then let a tracked test settle the rest.
