ChatGPT Ads

Maybe a customer mentioned it, or an ad rep left you a voicemail about it. Either way, you keep hearing that ChatGPT now shows ads, and you wonder if your business belongs there. This guide explains ChatGPT ads for local businesses in plain English, so you can decide on facts instead of hype. You’ll see where the ads appear, who sees them and how to tell whether a test makes sense now.

What ChatGPT Ads Are and Why Local Businesses Are Hearing About Them

ChatGPT ads are sponsored cards that can appear below ChatGPT’s answer when a conversation fits what a business sells. OpenAI started testing them in the United States on February 9, 2026. The program is still in beta, and self-serve buying is open to U.S. businesses.

Two things put it on the radar of small companies. First, OpenAI says its self-serve tool, Ads Manager, opened the platform to small and medium-sized businesses in May 2026. Second, ChatGPT’s user base is huge, even if only some users see ads. OpenAI’s August 2026 update on ChatGPT Ads puts it at more than 1 billion weekly active users.

Big numbers don’t make a channel right for you, though. They tell you that some of the people you serve likely use ChatGPT for research. So the real question is narrower. Can an ad there reach them at a useful moment, at a cost you can live with?

Where the Ads Appear and What They Look Like

Ads show up below ChatGPT’s response, not inside it. They’re clearly labeled as sponsored and visually separated from the answer. Each ad includes the advertiser’s name and logo, a title, a short line of copy, an image and a link to a landing page.

For example, picture a homeowner in Morristown who asks ChatGPT why her furnace keeps shutting off. ChatGPT answers her question first. Below that answer, a sponsored card from a nearby HVAC company might appear if its ad fits the conversation. She can read it, ignore it or tap through to the company’s page.

Advertisers use context hints to describe the conversations where their ad fits. These aren’t exact-match keywords, and using them doesn’t mean your ad will show in any given chat. Then an auction that weighs relevance, not just price, picks which ad appears. Where available, you can also aim a campaign at the cities or ZIP codes you serve. However, there’s no map listing or “near me” spot to buy.

Who Sees Them and Who Doesn’t

Not everyone on ChatGPT sees ads. Ads may appear for people on the Free and Go plans. Accounts on Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu don’t get ads. Neither do accounts that OpenAI identifies as belonging to users under 18.

There are other gaps, too. Temporary Chats don’t show ads. In addition, ads can’t appear near sensitive or regulated topics such as personal health, mental health or politics. For a dental office or med spa, that means some patient questions may never carry ads, even after approval.

What does that mean for you? Customers who pay for Plus or Pro, or use ChatGPT on a company or school plan, won’t see your ad. As a result, this channel reaches only part of your market. Treat it as an addition to channels that already work, not a replacement.

What OpenAI Says About Ads and Answers

Get this part straight before you spend a dollar. According to OpenAI’s help page on ads in ChatGPT, ads don’t influence ChatGPT’s answers. They run on separate systems, and in OpenAI’s words, “advertisers have no ability to shape, rank, or alter ChatGPT’s responses.” Seeing an ad also doesn’t mean OpenAI endorses or recommends the advertiser.

In practice, your ad sits in a labeled space below the answer. It has to earn the click on its own. Be wary of anyone who pitches ads as a way to get ChatGPT to recommend your business. That isn’t how OpenAI describes the product.

Privacy matters to your customers, too. OpenAI says it doesn’t share people’s conversations with advertisers. Advertisers get aggregated reports, such as views and clicks, instead.

How the Channel Compares With Google and Meta

Google and Meta have sold self-serve ads for many years. As a result, agencies and many owners know roughly what a lead from those platforms costs in their field. That history makes budgeting easier. If you’re weighing platforms, our guide to choosing online advertising channels explains what each one does best.

ChatGPT Ads is much younger. In its advertiser FAQ, OpenAI says the platform doesn’t yet have performance benchmarks across advertisers, industries or campaign types. It also warns that delivery and spend can fluctuate during the beta. So nobody can honestly tell you what a click or a lead will cost in your trade.

That doesn’t make it a bad bet. It makes it a test, and a test needs something to beat. For many trades, that means Google Ads campaigns for service companies, because search ads catch people when they need help. Before any test, write down what a new customer costs you today from Google or your best lead source. Then find your break-even cost with our guide to PPC budgets and cost per lead. Those two numbers are your yardstick.

Should Local Businesses Test ChatGPT Ads Now or Wait?

Check your business against both lists. If everything on the first list fits and nothing on the second does, a small test makes sense. If anything on the second list applies, fix it first. Most of those fixes pay off on every channel anyway.

Signs Your Business Is Ready

  • Your category is eligible. Local services are among the consumer categories OpenAI supports during its initial test. Dentists and med spas face case-by-case review, and law firms must be licensed to practice where the ad shows.
  • Your customers research before they buy. Think of a kitchen remodel, a new HVAC system or a roof replacement. People often ask questions first, which gives an ad a natural place to appear.
  • You have a learning budget. The minimum daily budget for U.S. dollar accounts is $25 per campaign. Only spend money you can afford to learn with.
  • Your landing page is ready. OpenAI reviews each ad’s landing page, and that page has to turn a curious reader into a caller. Our landing page guide for service businesses covers what it needs.
  • You can measure results. Add UTM tags, short labels on the end of your ad links, so visits show up in your own analytics. Then add call tracking and a clear way to measure marketing ROI, because you pay for clicks or views, never per conversion.

Signs You Should Wait

  • Calls go unanswered or leads sit for days. More traffic will only leak out faster.
  • You aren’t getting steady leads from Google search or your Google Business Profile yet. Fix those proven channels first.
  • Your service falls in a restricted category, or you can’t show the license OpenAI may ask for.
  • You need predictable lead costs this quarter. A beta with no benchmarks can’t give you that.
  • You mainly sell to other businesses. During its initial test, OpenAI mostly limits ads to consumer categories, so a B2B offer may not fit yet.

ChatGPT Ads for Local Businesses: Quick Answers

Can I pay to make ChatGPT recommend my business?

Not according to OpenAI. It says ads don’t influence ChatGPT’s answers, and that advertisers can’t change them.

What does a first test cost?

One campaign at the $25 U.S. daily minimum costs up to $700 over four weeks, plus any management fee. OpenAI publishes no typical cost per click or per lead, so judge the test against what a new customer costs you elsewhere.

Can I run ChatGPT ads myself?

Yes. Ads Manager is self-serve, so you don’t need an agency. Either way, one person at your business creates the advertiser account as its owner, then invites staff or an agency. OpenAI doesn’t support agencies creating accounts for clients. Also, plan for verification to take up to seven business days.

Getting Help With ChatGPT Ads for Your Local Business

ChatGPT Ads is new, and it rewards careful testing over big bets. Start with the checklist and fix any gaps. Next, ask ChatGPT your customers’ usual questions on a free account and study any sponsored cards. Seeing none proves little. Then run a small, well-tracked test. If its cost per new customer holds up against your current numbers, scale slowly. If it doesn’t, you’ve learned something for a cost you capped in advance.
