You’ve set a budget for ChatGPT Ads and sketched an offer. Then a question stops you: will OpenAI even let your business advertise? The short version: home services fit a supported category, while dentists and med spas need case-by-case approval. Housing and job listings, credit repair and debt relief are out. Below, we sort local businesses by what ChatGPT ad policies allow, restrict or rule out. Then we cover compliant copy and what to do after a rejection.

How OpenAI Screens Businesses Before Any Ad Runs
OpenAI checks eligibility at two points. First, it reviews your business when you set up an advertiser account. Its account setup guide says verification includes whether your products or services are eligible under its Ads Policies. Second, it reviews every ad before that ad can run.
Don’t assume your license settles the question, though. OpenAI’s eligibility help page says a registered or licensed business isn’t automatically eligible for every advertising category or market.
During its initial test period, OpenAI mainly limits ads to consumer categories such as lifestyle and household goods, local services, travel and experiences, and digital products or education. Self-serve buying is open to U.S. businesses. New to the channel? Start with our overview of ChatGPT ads for local businesses.
ChatGPT Ad Policies by Industry
Here’s where common local businesses stand under OpenAI’s U.S. rules. Because those rules can change, check OpenAI’s current ad policies before you launch.
Home Services, Shops and Restaurants
Plumbers, HVAC companies, roofers, cleaners and landscapers sit in the easiest spot, because local services is a supported category. Shops, salons and restaurants likely fit there or under lifestyle and household goods. Still, owners slip on details: “24/7 service” when nobody answers at night, or a price the landing page never shows. New Jersey law requires home improvement contractors to show their registration number on every in-state ad. Financing is a gray area, since OpenAI limits credit card and personal loan ads to select approved advertisers. Keep it out of the ad.
Dentists and Other Health Services

In the U.S., OpenAI may approve health advertisers such as dental offices, eye care practices and urgent care centers case by case. It may also ask for proof of licensure. Telehealth and prescription medicine ads don’t qualify at all. A family dentist in Hackensack, for example, should have license details ready before verification starts.
Approval also doesn’t mean your ad can show everywhere. OpenAI says ads aren’t eligible to appear near sensitive or regulated topics such as personal health, mental health or politics. As a result, a toothache question may never show your ad. So aim your copy and context hints at practical needs like new patient visits or Saturday hours, not symptoms. For other ways to reach patients, see our guide to digital marketing for medical practices.
Med Spas and Cosmetic Treatments
Med spas get a narrow lane. OpenAI’s eligibility table lists minimally invasive cosmetic procedures as allowed in the U.S., yet health advertisers still face case-by-case approval. Keep your ads to those treatments. Leave out invasive procedures, telehealth offers and prescription products, including a prescription weight loss program.
OpenAI’s eligibility table doesn’t list injectables by name, and some involve prescription products, which aren’t allowed. So confirm with OpenAI before you advertise them, and keep any injectable offer in its own ad so one rejection won’t stall your other ads. Also skip treatment claims you can’t back up and any copy that plays on body image. Our med spa marketing guide covers channels for the rest of your menu.
Real Estate Agents and Mortgage Lenders

OpenAI prohibits ads for individual housing rentals or sales. So you can’t advertise a specific listing, whether it’s a condo in Hoboken or a colonial in Westfield. Mortgages fall under restricted financial services, which OpenAI limits to select approved advertisers. An ad for your own services, such as a free pricing consult for Morris County sellers, isn’t a listing ad. Still, real estate isn’t a named test category, so OpenAI decides at verification.
Law Firms
Under OpenAI’s U.S. rules, a law firm can advertise only where it holds a license to practice law. That makes location targeting a compliance tool, not just a reach setting. For example, a Newark firm with only a New Jersey license should keep its campaign inside the state. Your state’s attorney advertising rules still apply on top of OpenAI’s. Our guide to marketing for law firms covers channels beyond ChatGPT.
Business Funding, Credit Repair and Debt Relief
These offers are off the table. OpenAI doesn’t allow ads for credit repair, debt settlement or debt assistance, and its U.S. table also rules out payday loans. Business funding doesn’t appear as an eligible category, so we treat it as ineligible and don’t run ChatGPT Ads for it.
Writing Ad Copy That Meets ChatGPT Ad Policies
The core rule is simple to state and harder to follow: ads must be truthful and not misleading. That covers claims about capabilities, pricing, outcomes, affiliations and comparisons. OpenAI also reviews each ad’s title, copy, media and landing page before it can run. So write the whole package for a skeptical reader.
- Prove every claim. Say “licensed and insured” only if both are true today. Skip “lowest prices in town” unless you can show it.
- State a clear offer. Say what you do, where you do it and what the reader gets, such as a free estimate or a posted price.
- Promise process, not outcomes. “Same-week appointments” is something you can check. “Perfect results” isn’t.
- Skip borrowed credibility. Don’t imply that OpenAI endorses you. In fact, OpenAI says seeing an ad doesn’t mean it endorses or recommends the advertiser.
- Match the landing page. The page should repeat the offer from the ad, show your license where it applies and make contact easy.
Here’s a before and after for a hypothetical plumber in Clifton. Before: “Lowest prices in Passaic County, and every job fixed on the first visit.” Both claims are hard to prove. After: “Licensed plumbers serving Clifton and nearby towns. You see the price before any work starts. Book online or call.” The owner can back up every line of the second version on the landing page.
Don’t Make Your ChatGPT Ad Look Like an Answer
OpenAI requires ads to stay clearly distinguishable from ChatGPT itself, and it may remove ads that imitate its interface. So don’t design your ad image to look like a chat window. Posting a mockup of your ad on Facebook or your website? Label it clearly and never pass it off as a real screenshot. Leave the OpenAI and ChatGPT logos out, too.
What to Do When OpenAI Rejects Your ChatGPT Ad
If OpenAI rejects an ad, its help center says you can use the appeal option in Ads Manager or the Request Review button. Before you do, fix the likely cause. Otherwise, the second review sees the same problem.
- Check the category first. If your offer is prohibited, no rewrite will fix it. If it’s restricted, you need approval, not better wording.
- Audit the landing page. Look for claims, prices or offers that don’t match the ad or that you can’t support.
- Cut unsupported claims. Remove superlatives, outcome promises and implied endorsements from the title and copy.
- Review the image. Make sure it shows your real business and doesn’t mimic the ChatGPT interface.
- Request a review with the fixes in place.
Also, don’t open a second account to get around a rejection. OpenAI’s setup guide says one account owner per business should create the advertiser account.
ChatGPT Ad Policies: Quick Answers
Can I run a ChatGPT ad to hire staff?
Not with a job listing. OpenAI’s ad policies prohibit ads for individual job listings, the same rule that covers housing listings. For hiring, stick with job boards and your own careers page.
If my ad passes review, will it show?
Not necessarily. Approval makes an ad eligible, but a relevance-weighted auction decides which eligible ad appears. Our explainer on how ChatGPT ads work walks through the auction.
How long does ChatGPT ad approval take?
OpenAI says verification can take up to seven business days. Each ad then gets its own review before it can run, so plan for both.
