How ChatGPT Ads Work: Auctions, Bids and How You’re Billed

ChatGPT Ads

Before you put money into ChatGPT Ads, you need to know two things. What decides whether your ad shows? And what will you pay when it does? Many sales pitches skip right past both. So here’s how ChatGPT ads work, from the auction and context hints to bids and budgets. Then we’ll run the numbers on a sample budget you can adapt to your own business.

How ChatGPT Ads Work, From Question to Click

If you’re new to the channel, our plain-English overview of ChatGPT Ads for local businesses covers who sees these ads and whether to test now. This post stays with the machinery. Here’s a simplified look at what happens each time an ad could show.

  1. A person asks a question. Ads may appear for people on the Free and Go plans.
  2. ChatGPT writes its answer. OpenAI says ads run on separate systems and don’t influence that answer. It also says advertisers can’t shape, rank or alter it.
  3. The system finds eligible ads. Only approved ads whose targeting matches the person qualify. OpenAI also keeps ads away from sensitive topics such as personal health and politics.
  4. An auction chooses among them. Any ad it selects appears below the response, labeled as sponsored.
  5. You pay per click or per 1,000 impressions. Which one depends on your campaign objective.

Each ad has six parts: your business name, your logo (the small favicon), a title, a short line of copy, an image and the landing page it opens. Before an ad can run, OpenAI reviews its words, image and landing page. So promise only what that page actually delivers.

The Auction Behind ChatGPT Ads

In its guide to the basics of ads in ChatGPT, OpenAI says it uses “a relevance-weighted, second-price auction” to choose among eligible ads.

Why the Highest Bid Doesn’t Always Win

Relevance-weighted means your bid isn’t the only factor. OpenAI says ad selection considers the conversation’s context and intent, your landing page, your title and copy, and your context hints. When a user has ads personalization turned on, some signals from their broader ChatGPT use can count, too. So, in principle, a well-matched ad with a fair bid can compete with a bigger spender whose ad fits poorly.

Second-Price: You May Pay Less Than Your Bid

In a classic second-price auction, the winner pays about what it took to beat the next competitor, not its full bid. Bid $5 against a runner-up at $3.20, and you’d pay about $3.20. OpenAI’s relevance weighting and other details may differ. Either way, your max bid is a ceiling, not the price of every click. Our guide to PPC budgets, bidding and cost per lead walks through similar auction logic on search platforms.

Context Hints Are Not Exact-Match Keywords

Context hints are how you tell the system where your ad belongs. They describe the conversations and topics where your ad may be relevant, and they can include keywords. However, OpenAI is clear that they aren’t exact-match keywords, and they don’t promise delivery in any particular chat.

That’s a big shift from search ads. There, you choose keywords and block unwanted searches with negative keywords, as our guide to getting fewer junk Google Ads leads explains. With ChatGPT, you describe situations instead. So let your copy screen out poor fits by naming your service and area.

For example, picture a plumbing company in Hackensack. Useful hints might describe a leaking water heater, weak water pressure in an older home, or choosing between a tank and a tankless heater. Each one names a problem the company solves, in words a homeowner would use. Then the title, copy and landing page should speak to those same situations, because relevance counts in the auction.

Who You Can Reach: Location, Platform and Audiences

Targeting decides who can see your ad at all. OpenAI’s help article on creating campaigns describes these targeting options.

  • Location. Beyond countries, you can target states or regions, cities, markets and postal codes where available. A contractor in Morris County, for instance, could limit ads to the ZIP codes its trucks serve.
  • Platform. You can choose Android app, Android web, desktop web, iOS app or iOS web.
  • Custom audiences. Targeting one requires at least 25,000 matched users. Many local customer lists are smaller than that.

Also, ChatGPT Ads have no map or “near me” ad placements. Location targeting controls who sees the ad, not where it sits on the screen.

Bids: What Your Max CPC Really Means

For click campaigns, OpenAI recommends starting with a maximum bid of $3 to $5 per click. Treat that as a ceiling to start from, not an average cost or a forecast.

Check that range against the break-even math in the sample budget below, then adjust only after real data comes in. If your ad rarely shows, raising the bid is one lever. A tighter match between hints, copy and landing page is another.

How Budgets and Billing Work for ChatGPT Ads

The minimum daily budget for U.S. dollar accounts is $25. OpenAI also recommends that new advertisers start with a daily budget, rather than a campaign total, so they can watch delivery first.

A daily budget isn’t a hard daily cap, though. It’s an average over seven days. On any single day, spend can reach twice your daily budget. However, a full week won’t go past seven times your daily budget. So a $25 daily budget might spend $50 on a busy Tuesday and still stay within $175 for the week.

Views, Clicks or Conversions

A Views campaign bills per 1,000 impressions (CPM), while a Clicks campaign bills per click (CPC). The Conversions objective steers delivery toward conversions, yet you still pay per click or per 1,000 impressions, never per conversion. For a first local test, Clicks is often the simplest to judge, because you pay only when someone clicks.

Since you pay for traffic rather than outcomes, track which clicks become calls and forms. Add UTM parameters to your landing page links, then use our guide to marketing attribution to tie visits to sales.

Billing is postpay, so charges come after ads deliver. Spend figures in Ads Manager can also lag by 7 to 8 hours, so don’t judge a campaign on a same-day number.

A Sample Budget for a First ChatGPT Ads Test

Here’s a hypothetical example, not a forecast. OpenAI’s advertiser FAQ says the platform doesn’t yet have performance benchmarks across advertisers, industries or campaign types.

Picture a roofing company in Bergen County testing a Clicks campaign for leak repairs. It sets a $40 daily budget and a $4 max bid.

  • Weekly spend: up to $280, or seven times the daily budget.
  • Busiest single day: up to $80, or twice the daily budget.
  • Four-week test: up to $1,120 in ad spend, plus any management fee.
  • Click math: if every click cost the full $4, a $280 week would buy 70 clicks. The second-price auction may lower what you pay per click, but delivery can also fall short of the budget.

Next, set a break-even point before launch. Say a leak repair leaves the company about $360 in gross profit, and it books one in three qualified leads. Then it can pay up to about $120 per qualified lead and break even on ad spend alone. At $4 a click, about one in 30 clicks must become a qualified lead. Over four weeks at full spend, that’s about nine qualified leads from 280 clicks. Compare that $120 with what a qualified lead from search costs you today. Then write down the result that earns a second month.

Finally, give it time. OpenAI warns that delivery and spend can fluctuate during the beta, so one slow week says little. Judge the test on four weeks of tracked calls and forms, not on clicks alone.

How ChatGPT Ads Work: Quick Answers

Can I See What People Asked Before They Clicked?

No. OpenAI says it doesn’t share conversations with advertisers. Instead, you get aggregated reporting, such as views and clicks. That’s why tagged links and call tracking on your side matter.

Do ChatGPT Ads Charge Per Lead or Booked Job?

No. Every objective bills per click or per 1,000 impressions, and OpenAI never bills per conversion, even on the Conversions objective. That’s why you set your own break-even cost per qualified lead before launch, as in the sample budget above.
